Leave on a light at night The Police Department would like to remind residents that nighttime lighting around the home (or business) is one of the most effective and efficient crime prevention applications readily available to any citizen more details The College Park Crime Watch is committed to educating our residents in Crime Prevention and Safety. To find out how you can get involved email College Park Crime Watch Coordinator, Chris Madden at cwakmadden@tx.rr.com or (972) 783-8177 ITEM 1: On 7-8-09, at approximately 11:08 AM, Officer was contacted by resident in reference to a suspicious person who came to her residence around 1:00 PM on 7-2-09 at 3XX Hillside Ave in Richardson. Resident advised around 1:00 PM on 7-2-09, a white male, 20's, clean cut with brown hair, wearing a dark blue company shirt and khaki pants came to her residence to solicit for an alarm company. She did not remember the company name but thought it was similar to ADT. She had agreed to purchase an alarm system and the suspect was supposed to come back to her residence around 1:00 PM on 7-6-09 but he never came back. She did not provide any of her personal information but she was concerned as she heard on the news about actors posing as alarm solicitors who scammed homeowners. Resident was advised to recontact RPD if the suspect came back to her residence. ITEM 2: On 07-8-09, at approximately 11:30 AM, several residents in the Woods of SpringCreek II neighborhood (far northeast Richardson) reported a "solicitor" going door to door asking if children lived at the residence, how many? how old? Reports are she was in a silver Honda Civic, had blonde hair, yellow shirt and plaid pants and did not have a permit. Attempts to locate her were unsuccessful. Both of these incidents have not been confirmed as scams. However, they are examples of suspicious circumstances that should be reported to Police. Please call 911 to report this type of activity. If you are tempted to do business via home solicitations, be sure you know who you are dealing with and do a little research before entering into any type of agreement or contract. I would try to avoid doing business this way, be aware there are folks out there who are trying to get your personal information under many different guises. The City of Richardson requires that all solicitors have a permit and they must have it while they are soliciting and show it to you upon request. Call the Police if you encounter someone soliciting without a permit or will not show it to you. My advice is to never open the door to a stranger, including solicitors. Speak through the door and tell them you are not interested, burglars will use this method to determine if someone is home and you want to let them know somebody is. Don't invite the opportunity for a crime to occur. If you didn't wake up in the morning with the intent or need for what they are offering, you probably didn't need it nor should you allow yourself to be tempted into a quick decision involving money or your personal information. Criminals love the darkness and shadows to hide in. Keep your shrubs trimmed at or below the window ledges and consider trimming bushes wherever you think a criminal could use them for concealment around your home. If you happen to be awake late at night, getting a glass of water or answering natures call, take a minute to check around the house, peak out a few windows, maybe you will see a suspicious car parked outside, call it in. Bring your car to the Richardson Senior Center, 820 W Arapaho, between 10AM and 2PM to have your car’s VIN etched into each window. VIN etched is used to deter auto theft. Car thieves who steal cars for resale or for parts will tend to avoid vehicles that have the glass etched with the VIN.
